A three-pointer by
Bahari Amaya with 10.4 seconds remaining capped a big comeback for the University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team on Saturday. The Prairie Stars defeated Drury at TRAC by an 88-87 score.
Â
The Prairie Stars trailed by 10 points with 7:16 remaining, and still trailed by seven with four minutes left. UIS played good defense in the final four minutes, and the offense went on an 8-0 run to give the Prairie Stars an 85-84 advantage with 1:49 left. On its next possession though, Drury got a three-point play to go back up by two.
Â
UIS set up its offense after a timeout and
Peyton Allen eventually drove to his right at the top of the key. He handed the ball off to Amaya, who stepped behind the three-point line and drained his sixth three-pointer of the afternoon.
Â
Drury had two more chances for the win. It missed a three-pointer with three seconds left, but got the offensive rebound after the ball went out of bounds off UIS. Its layup attempt then in the final second was blocked by
Daniel Soetan, and time ran out before either team could control the rebound.
Â
Both teams were hot shooting the ball throughout the afternoon. UIS shot 63.5 percent from the field for the game, and made nearly 60 percent of its three-pointers. Sixteen of the team's 33 made field goals were three-pointers, the most three-pointers in a game for the program since moving to the NCAA level. Drury shot over 60 percent in the first half, but UIS was able to cool them down just enough in the second half. The Panthers finished shooting 54 percent from the field, but made just one of their final seven attempts.
Â
Amaya finished with a career-high 24 points, with 18 of those coming in the second half and eight coming in the final four minutes. He was nine-of-11 from the field, including six-of-seven from three-point range.
Gilwan Nelson had 19 points, followed by
Cole Harper with 13 and Allen with 11. Nelson was seven-of-nine shooting, while Harper was perfect on five attempts, including three from behind the arc.
Â
Aundrae Williams had a team-high five assists, one more than Allen. Soetan finished with three blocks and two steals, both team-highs. Nelson was the leading rebounder with five boards.
Â
UIS improves to 12-5 on the season and 5-2 in GLVC play after defeating Drury for just the second time in 14 meetings. The Prairie Stars are on the road next week, starting with a Thursday game at Truman State.
