Tiffin University edged the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) men's soccer team 1-0 in overtime during Saturday's match at Kiwanis Stadium.
Leo Hasenstab fired a pass from the right corner and Abdoul Magic Sy headed the pass in for a goal 45 seconds into the first overtime as Tiffin (2-0) sealed the victory against UIS (0-2). Hasenstab was credited with the assist.
"It's hard to swallow that defeat," UIS coach
Adam Hall said. "We played so well and created good chances."
Tiffin created a scoring opportunity in the 49th minute when Tom Maas sent a through ball to Hasenstab, but
Pijus Petkevicius was able to recover the ball before Hasenstab squared up for the shot.
In the same minute,
Josh Moore fired a pass to
Mario Gonzalez. The pass deflected into an airborne 50-50 ball. Gonzalez and Tiffin goalkeeper Dylan Morris raced for the ball. Gonzalez maneuvered behind Morris, delivered a bicycle kick that went wide.
Malik Suleman lined up a shot on the right side of the top of the box and drilled a shot that struck the left post 53 minutes into the match.
Gonzalez came close to breaking the tie 76 minutes into the match after drilling a shot that drilled the post.
The Dragons shut down the Prairie Stars for the remainder of the contest.
Gonzalez contributed four shots while
Mario Falsone and
Javier Milla tallied two shots apiece.
Rhys Wallace provided UIS's only shot on goal.
Harry Hiscock,
Daniel Kemp,
Emmanuel Nhonga and
Adrian Ortega each turned in a shot.
Magic Sy led the Dragons with four shots and produced both of Tiffin's shots on goal. McKnight delivered two shots and Suleman added a shot.
Morris posted a shutout after spending 90 minutes, 45 seconds in goal. He saved the only shot he faced.
Petkevicius saw two shots and saved one.
UIS outshot Tiffin by a 13-7 margin.
"We will take the positives, learn from mistakes and be ready for the next game."
UIS clashes with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1-0) on Thursday at 2 p.m. in Kenosha, Wis. The Prairie Stars then battle Purdue Northwest University (1-0) on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Hammond, Ind.
