SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (6-6, 1-0) picked up a win in their first Great Lakes Valley Conference match of the season, beating Southern Indiana (6-8, 0-1) by a score of 5-4. The match came down to the final pairing as
Maegan Flight picked up the clinching win in three sets.
The Prairie Stars fell behind 2-1 after doubles, as
Jane Carter and
Sharon Danquah picked up the lone victory, an 8-6 win in the top spot.
Kaitlyn Thornhill and
Kena Bere took a tough 8-6 loss in the second spot as Flight and
Danielle Mendoza dropped an 8-2 decision.
In singles play, it was all Prairie Stars as four decisions went to UIS to pick up the come from behind victory. Carter set the pace for UIS in the match, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-1 in the top spot. Thornhill, playing in the two spot, was bested 6-2, 6-0 but Danquah, who slid into the third spot, wont 6-4, 6-3.
UIS took two of the final three matches to bring home the match, as Bere won 7-5, 7-5 before Mendoza was bested 6-1, 6-1. With the match riding on Flight, the freshman dominated the first set, winning 6-1, before dropping a tough second set 4-6. Flight responded in kind, winning the final set 6-1 to take the win and the match.
This marked the first GLVC win for first year head coach,
Samantha Schall and snapped a five-game slide for UIS. The Prairie Stars are in the middle of a six-game home stand, three of which are GLVC matches. UIS will place again on Friday, March 31
st against McKendree, looking to go 2-0 in conference.
Earlier this week, on Friday, UIS played Maryville in a cross-divisional GLVC match, and fell 2-7 at the UIS Tennis Courts. UIS was swept during doubles play while Carter and Bere picked up the two singles wins for the Prairie Stars.
