Prairie Stars Fall to Saints to End Home Stand

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- Paxton Harmon hit four three's and Eddie Longmeyer scored 20 points off the bench but Illinois Springfield (7-15, 2-11) came up short at home against Maryville (8-17, 2-11) by a score of 71-61. The Prairie Stars couldn't overcome a slow shooting night against the Saints, who jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead in the first three minutes.

UIS fought back to take the lead in the opening half with 8:57 remaining as Harmon connected on his fourth triple of the half. After the Saints came out firing, UIS weathered the storm and took a 20-19 lead after the Harmon trey.

The Prairie Stars gained their largest lead of the night after a layup from Zach Steinberg, giving the Stars a 25-21 lead with 6:32 to play in the half.

Maryville responded with an 8-0 run before Harmon ended the drought with a layup. The Saints ended the half with a three with eight seconds remaining and took a 39-35 lead into the half.

The Saints opened up the second half with back-to-back three's and hit their first three field goal attempts to take a 47-37 lead. Their lead grew to as much as 11 in the second half on two occasions but consecutive three's from Vince Walker cut the deficit to six with 8:44 to play.

The Saints were able to keep the Prairie Stars at bay though, never letting the lead get below five and hit 7 of their final 9 free throw attempts.

Longmeyer scored a game-high 20 points on 9-of-14 from the field and grabbed seven boards. Logan Gonce, who got his second start of the season and first since opening night, tied his career-high with six assists.

Harmon added 16 points, hitting 4-of-9 from deep, giving him 76 for his career and inching him closer to the top-10 in all-time three-point field goals.

With nine rebounds tonight, Steinberg moved into seventh place all-time and has now brought down 354 career boards as he concludes his sophomore campaign.

UIS will look to end a six-game losing streak when they open up a four-game road trip at Missouri S&T on Thursday night at 7:30 PM.
