SPRINGFIELD, IL --- After a slow start, the Prairie Stars (3-2) rolled to their third straight victory, beating Robert Morris-Springfield (2-3) by a score of 104-47. Illinois Springfield trailed by six early in the game as Robert Morris hit three of their first four attempts from deep, but after the Eagles took a 16-10 lead, it was all Prairie Stars for the next 33 minutes.
From the 12 minute mark of the opening half until the halftime buzzer, UIS outscored the Eagles 45-7, utilizing a 23-0 run to take a 38-19 advantage.
RMU-Springfield scored the first bucket of the second half but then UIS responded with 15 unanswered points to continue their dominance. With the win, UIS improved to 9-0 all-time against Robert Morris-Springfield, the most wins against any one opponent without a loss.
The 104 points is the most for the Prairie Stars this season, eclipsing their previous high of 100 against Robert Morris-Peoria on Friday. The Prairie Stars 54 rebounds was just one shy of the single-game record of 55, set in 2014 against Lincoln. With that, UIS totaled 27 assists for the second straight game, tying their single-game high. Also, UIS totaled 14 steals, which tied the single-game record as well.
Gilwan Nelson and
Eddie Longmeyer each dropped in 18 points for UIS, making that a new career-high for Nelson. In addition, Nelson added a team-high seven rebounds and had one assist and two steals.
Wayde Smith scored a career-high nine points off the bench, while
Aundrae Williams had five steals, the most for any UIS player this season.
The Prairie Stars will continue their five-game home stand on Saturday when they welcome in Division III opponent MacMurray College out of Jacksonville, Illinois. UIS will try for their fourth consecutive victory, something that hasn't been done since the 2011-12 season.
