SOMERS, WI --- Vince Walker had himself a career-night, scoring 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting and 7-of-11 from three, but it wasn't enough to hold off the #25 Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside. Illinois Springfield (7-12, 2-8) took a 36-30 lead into the half but Parkside (16-3, 8-2) came away with a 92-76 victory at home. The seven three's from Walker is a UIS single-game record, breaking a tie with eight players, last accomplished on February 12 of 2015.
The Prairie Stars came out firing in the first half, shooting over 53 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes and 6-of-12 from deep to take a six-point lead into the break. The shooting dipped slightly in the second half but the Prairie Stars still shot 48 percent from the field on the game and hit 10 three's. It was a 62-point effort from the Rangers in the second half that pushed the home team to the victory.
UIS began the game with back-to-back three's from
Paxton Harmon and Walker and hit five of their first six shots to take a 12-11 lead six minutes in. Three consecutive three's from Walker gave UIS a 23-14 lead with 10:32 to go and gave the sophomore guard 14 points after just nine and a half minutes of play.
UIS stretched their lead to as much as 13 in the opening half but a 14-2 run closed the gap to just one before a layup from
Zach Steinberg and three from Walker pushed the lead to six at the break.
Walker was 6-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 from deep in the first half for 17 points. No other player had more than nine for either team.
Parkside took their first lead since the 16:29 mark in the first half on a three with 13:54 remaining but Harmon answered with a layup to give UIS a 51-50 advantage. Harmon again gave UIS a lead with 8:50 to play on another three before Walker hit his final three of the night with 5:09 to play to give the Prairie Stars a 70-69 lead.
From this point, Wisconsin-Parkside ended the game on a 23-4 run to stay unbeaten at home on the season at 10-0.
Along with the single-game mark for three's, Walker added five rebounds and one assist in 36 minutes. Harmon finished with 18 points and five rebounds on 6-of-11 from the field while
Logan Gonce played nearly perfect, scoring ten points on 4-of-5, hit both free throw attempts, dished four assists and didn't turn the ball over in 24 minutes.
UIS will look to end a three-game slide on Saturday when they travel to Lewis University for a 3:00 PM tip.
