KANSAS CITY, MO --- The Prairie Stars (6-9, 1-5) fell on the road to Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent Rockhurst (9-6, 3-4) by a score of 72-65.
Vince Walker hit four three's for the second consecutive game and totaled 18 points but it wasn't enough as UIS couldn't overcome an eight-point halftime deficit.
Paxton Harmon, coming off a career-high 27 point effort at William Jewell, began the game with a layup on the first possession. Rockhurst combatted with back-to-back three's before Walker hit his first of the night to cut the deficit to 6-5. The Hawks responded with an 8-0 run to take a 14-5 advantage with 14:30 remaining in the half.
With 7:46 Malachi Nix hit three straight free throws to give Rockhurst a 24-14 lead but Walker started a 13-2 run to give UIS a 27-26 lead. After a Walker free throw, Longmeyer forced a turnover which led to a fast break layup before Walker hit back-to-back three's to put UIS within three. Harmon and
Logan Gonce closed out the run with a jumper and fast break layup before two free throws from UIS gave them a 27-26 lead.
Rockhurst closed the half with an 11-2 run to take a 37-29 lead into the half.
The Hawks took as much as a 16-point lead in the second half but the Prairie Stars battled to cut the deficit to four with 3:21 remaining on Walker's fourth triple of the night. With 17 seconds remaining,
Zach Steinberg cut the Hawks lead to three but Rockhurst hit eight of their final nine free throw attempts to close the game.
Walker hit 6-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-6 from deep for a team-high 18 points, while collecting six boards and two steals. This is Walker's fourth consecutive game with four three's and sixth such game of the season.
Longmeyer tallied 12 points while Steinberg ended with 11 and Harmon 10. UIS shot 48.9 percent from the field and hit 8-of-18 from three but the Hawks did just enough to pull out the victory. Steinberg --- the GLVC leader in rebounds per game --- grabbed six boards on the night.
UIS will make a quick turnaround on Monday as they head on the road to face McKendree. The Bearcats will be on extra rest as their game with William Jewell got cancelled on Saturday due to the looming ice storm. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
