Men’s Soccer Looks to Stay Unscathed in GLVC Play

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- After suffering two tough one-goal losses to open the season, the Prairie Stars (2-2, 2-0) responded with two victories to open GLVC play, just the second time they have done so since 2010.The Prairie Stars picked up a 3-0 victory over Quincy and a 3-1 decision over Truman State last weekend in their first home contests of the year.

SETTING THE SCENE
As stated, the Prairie Stars opened the season with back-to-back one goal losses, both of which came in the final five minutes of regulation. Coming home for the first time, UIS pulled off a 3-0 win over Quincy University before disposing of Truman State 3-1, improving to 2-0 in GLVC play.

Zach Allevi --- who led the Prairie Stars in goals last season with five --- already has four goals on the year, through the first four games. The senior has totaled nine points, assisting on one of the three goals against Truman State, which puts him in a tie for second in the league. Four different players have found the back of the net for UIS, including Jack Coombes, who scored both game-winning goals last weekend, which were his first two goals in his UIS career.

SCOUTING MISSOURI – ST. LOUIS
UMSL comes into the weekend with a 3-1 record, winning three straight after falling in their season opener to Lindenwood. Yet to be shutout, the Tritons have scored seven goals on the year, averaging 1.75 goals per game.

Pat Ries also has four goals and an assist on the year, tying him with Allevi for the second most points in the conference.

SCOUTING MARYVILLE
The Saints are 2-2 on the year with a 0-2 mark in GLVC play. Maryville fell to both Southern Indiana and Bellarmine by scores of 2-1 on the opening weekend of conference play. Prior to that, they took down Christian Brothers 2-1 before beating Delta State 5-3.

Pontus Gitselov leads the way for Maryville with three goals, two coming against Delta State. The goalie, Christi Kjaersgaard has played all 374 minutes in goal and given up eight goals against just 14 saves, good for a .636 save percentage.

PRAIRIE STAR NOTES
  • Both game-winning goals last week came up a man, as both Quincy and Truman State were handed red cards in the second half.
  • UIS is 0-6 all-time against UMSL and 2-3-1 against Maryville
  • UIS' 6 goals in GLVC play so far ranks 2nd best, behind only Drury (7)
  • UIS has surrendered just one goal against in conference play, ranking them tied for 3rd

COMING UP NEXT
With this being their first true road series, the Prairie Stars will return home next week to face Saint Joseph's and UIndy on September 23rd and 25th. UIS is in the middle of a ten game GLVC stretch where they will play six games at home opposed to four on the road.
