SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars knocked off GLVC east foe Saint Joseph's on Friday before coming up just short of an upset bid the following afternoon against Lewis. The Prairie Stars upended Saint Joseph's 9-0 before falling to Lewis 6-3 in their second to final GLVC match of the season.
ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 9, SAINT JOSEPH'S 0
After the Prairie Stars took all three doubles matches, dropping only two sets combined, UIS coasted through the singles portion, picking up the sweep.
Jane Carter and
Faith Hook notched a win in the top doubles spot while
Danielle Mendoza and
Katelyn Michl also shut out their opponent in the third slot.
Jasmin Morgan and
Sharon Danquah coasted to an easy 8-2 victory as well.
In singles, Michl was the only player that needed three sets to defeat her opponent, winning the final set 10-3 after narrowly missing the second set 7-6. The Prairie Stars improved to 9-11, 2-2 with the win, setting a season best mark for wins.
LEWIS 6, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 3
The Prairie Stars fought hard til the end but came up just short of the regionally ranked Lewis Flyers. UIS fell in two of the three doubles matches, as Mendoza and Michl picked up an 8-2 victory in the final doubles match. Morgan and Danquah battled to an 8-5 defeat in the second spot. Lewis, now 13-4, 5-0 is ranked eighth in the region. Carter and Hook fell to the sixth ranked doubles team in the first spot.
In singles, Mendoza and Michl again each picked up victories, scoring 6-2, 6-0 wins. The two combined to take all three points for the Prairie Stars on the day.
Carter lost in singles for just the second time in her last ten matches while Mendoza is now 6-0 in her last seven matches across singles and doubles.
The Prairie Stars will travel next Wednesday to UMSL and Fontbonne for non-conference action on Wednesday before finishing up with Bellarmine on Saturday to conclude conference play.
