LEBANON, IL --- The men's and women's tennis teams closed out a two-match GLVC weekend by splitting at McKendree on Saturday. The men fell 7-2 while the women battled to a 5-4 victory.
In doubles,
Cole Buehnerkemper played with a new partner,
Sam Clarke, due to injuries surrounding the Prairie Stars. The top duo for UIs won 8-5 for the Prairie Stars lone win in doubles.
Down 2-1 heading to singles play,
Grant Fitzsimmons was the only player to pull out a singles win, picking up a win in the sixth spot. Fitzsimmons won a three-set marathon, falling in the first set 6-4 before coming back for a 7-6, 13-11 victory to win.
Christian Timm also went three sets, but was unable to come away with a victory, falling 6-3, 6-7, 6-10.
The women's team, led by
Jane Carter, grinded out a 5-4 win over the Bearcats, takin two-of-three in doubles play to start the match. Carter and
Faith Hook won in the top spot 8-5, followed by
Sharon Danquah and Jasmine Morgan who won 8-5, giving UIS a 2-1 lead.
Carter won again in singles, although she had to go three sets. She dominated the two sets she won, 6-0, 6-2 but fell in the second set 4-6. Danquah won in the second spot in a quick two-set match 6-3, 6-1.
Danielle Mendoza picked up the clinching win with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the five spot.
The women's team improved to 7-11 on the season and moved to 1-2 in the conference with three GLVC matches to play, all of which are at home. The men's team dropped to 9-9 on the season and will also have the same three GLVC home matches to close out the season.
