UIS Offense Struggles in Loss to Missouri S&T

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (8-15, 2-13) struggled to find a rhythm for much of the game as they fell to Missouri S&T (8-14, 4-11) by a score of 64-43. The Prairie Stars shot just 23.4 percent from the field, their lowest mark of the season, as only one player found double-figures. Along with her 10 points, Syerra Cunningham also brought down 13 rebounds --- seven on the offensive side --- as she recorded her sixth double-double of the season.

The Prairie Stars fell down 10-2 early, and then a 9-to-4 run from the Miners increased that deficit to 13 with over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. After a free throw from the Miners increased their lead back to 15 in the second quarter, the Prairie Stars trailed 27-12 with eight minutes until half.

This was the start of a 10-0 run for UIS as Caroline Kelty began the run with a jumper at 6:41. Morgan Knorr followed with a three before Meredith Marti followed with a three of her own. The run ended with a layup from Cunningham and the Prairie Stars trailed by just five with just under five minutes remaining.

However, the Minors combatted the run with a 9-0 run of their own to close out the half and take a 14 point lead into halftime. The Prairie Stars closed the half missing their last nine shots over the final four minutes and 52 seconds.

UIS was never able to get the deficit under ten in the second half as Missouri S&T shot 41 percent from the field while UIS made just six of their 30 shot attempts for a 21-point second half.

The most impressive stat from UIS was their 40 rebound effort, of which 20 were on the offensive side. Along with the seven from Cunningham, Kelty brought down four and Knorr and Shelbi Patterson each had a pair.

The Prairie Stars will continue a four-game home stand next Thursday as they take on Southern Indiana and Bellarmine in the final two game games of the season before ended the regular season at McKendree the following Thursday.
