OAKLAND CITY, IND. --- The Prairie Stars ended a four-game losing streak in a big way Monday night, as they beat Oakland City 93-64 on the road. UIS (7-12, 1-10) had previously beaten Oakland City (8-9) by ten earlier this season but on this night, the Prairie Stars ran away for their largest margin of victory of the season.
The Prairie Stars wasted no time instilling their dominance on the Mighty Oaks in their final non-conference game of the year, as
Meredith Marti began the game by hitting her team leading 41
st three of the season on their first possession. This began a 17-0 Prairie Star run to begin the game in the opening six minutes and five seconds. The Mighty Oaks wouldn't get on the board until 3:33 left in the first quarter, and managed just six points in the first ten minutes of play.
Marti hit three three's in the opening quarter and her and
Syerra Cunningham combined for the first 17 points of the game before
Chelsea Cross scored four in a row for UIS. The Prairie Stars took a 24-6 lead into the second quarter and never looked back.
They increased their lead to 22 at the break and limited the Mighty Oaks to just 21 first half points. The Prairie Star lead got up to as much as 39 in the fourth quarter, the most they had been up on any opponent this season.
UIS set multiple season bests in the 29-point road win as every single player on the roster scored for the Prairie Stars. The 93 total points was a season-high, besting an 80-point effort on November 21
st against Lincoln (Mo.). UIS scored 50 second half points, again, besting a 47-point half against Greenville on December 8
th. The 29-point victory was the largest margin of victory for UIS this season, which was previously held by a 15-point win over Principia.
Marti led the way for the Prairie Stars with a 21-point night, one shy of her season high of 22 --- which was against Oakland City in the first match-up. Marti hit seven threes in the contest, besting her previous mark of six, set in the aforementioned game.
Cunningham brought in a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with nine points, while
Leslie Hairston scored a career-high 12 points off the bench on 4-of-8 shooting. Cross also reached double-figures with a ten-point night while
Morgan Knorr and
Shelbi Patterson each had seven points.
Caroline Kelty,
Chasitee Shroyer, and
Emily Matsen each hit two three's and had six points.
As a team, the Prairie Stars hit 15-of-30 from deep --- two shy of the all-time mark of 17 against RMU – Peoria (12/10/14) --- but the most of any game this season.
The Prairie Stars will look to gain on this momentum as they travel to Maryville on Thursday and UMSL on Saturday as they close out the season with seven consecutive GLVC games, three of which are on the road.
