SPRINGFIELD, IL --- After a 12-day layoff, the Prairie Stars (6-4) returned to the hardwood to take on Division III opponent Blackburn (0-10) and rolled to a 69-34 victory. Illinois Springfield set a program record with 12 blocks in the game, breaking the previous record of 9 set on January 22
nd of 2009.
Four Prairie Stars reached double-figures in the win, led by
Destiny Ramsey who connected on 7-of-9 from the field for 14 points.
Syerra Cunningham notched her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds while
Caroline Kelty filled the stat sheet with four points, five assists, and four steals.
UIS hit just 3-of-17 from deep but forced 20 Beaver turnovers which resulted in 27 points, 24 coming on the fast break. The Prairie Stars scored 42 points in the paint in the game, dwarfing just the eight Blackburn scored.
UIS jumped out to a 14-0 lead to begin the game and after a layup by Blackburn cut the deficit to 16-3 with 5:17 remaining, did not surrender another basket in the first quarter. The Prairie Stars used a 17-0 run to take the first quarter 33-3 and never looked back.
Jasmine Sangster scored 13 points off the bench for the Prairie Stars, giving her a new career-high, eclipsing her previous high of 12 which she set last week.
Serving as the final tune-up before the full slate of conference games begin, UIS will continue a three-game home stand as they host Truman State and Quincy University on Thursday the 5
th and Saturday the 7
