UIS Falls to Lewis Despite Late Game Heroics

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- Jamall Millison hit one of the biggest shots of the year to send the game to double-overtime, but in the end, the Prairie Stars (8-12, 2-8) fell to Lewis (14-6, 6-4) by a score of 88-80 in their first overtime contest of the season.

On a night when Millison was recognized for reaching the 1,000 point plateau, he proved his best work was yet to be seen. Millison and fellow senior, Davi Austin, each had a team-high 16 points in the loss and come crunch time, were the guys the Prairie Stars turned to.

Early in the game, the Flyers jumped out to a six point lead before Paxton Harmon and Vince Walker hit back-to-back three's to tie the game at 22 with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half. UIS could not gain the lead though, as the Flyers went into the half with a 31:29 lead as both teams went scoreless in the final 1:30.

In the second half, the Prairie Stars relentlessly battled back and tied the game at 38 before taking their first lead since early in the game 43-42 on an Austin breakaway layup. After another Austin layup pushed the score to 45-44, the Prairie Stars went cold, missing their next six shots and falling behind 55-45 with 3:41 to play.

As you would expect, Millison ended the drought with a three before Austin grabbed two more points on a fast break off his own steal. Vince Walker, who ended the night with nine points off the bench, ended the 8-0 run with a three, forcing the Flyers into a timeout. In just 80 seconds, the Prairie Stars scored eight unanswered points and were right back in the game.

With under a minute to go, Harmon went to the line and sank two free throws to tie the game and then grabbed the defensive rebound on the following possession, giving UIS a chance at the last shot for victory. Tied at 57, the Prairie Stars turned to Harmon but the shot didn't fall, and the two teams needed five more minutes to settle the game.

In overtime, UIS jumped out to an early lead on a jumper from Richard Freeman and a three from Millison but Lewis answered back and took a five point lead with 22 seconds remaining. After an Austin layup and split free throws by Lewis, Harmon was fouled on the other end, down four with four seconds remaining. Harmon, most importantly, made the first free throw, setting up an intentional miss on the second with hopes of getting a three. And that's exactly what happened.

Millison grabbed the rebound and went straight to the corner, just to hit the biggest three of the year, tying the game at 70 as time expired. Down five with 22 seconds remaining and down four with four seconds left, the Prairie Stars completed the comeback once again and forced double overtime.

However, Lewis came out in the second overtime and jumped out to a seven point lead, and UIS was unable to make yet another comeback. Miles Simelton ended the game with 33 points for Lewis, making 17-of-21 from the free throw line, including each of his last nine attempts.

Millison and Austin each had 16 points and Freeman added 12 on the night. Off the bench, Harmon had six points and nine rebounds while nine different Prairie Stars scored on the night. As a team, they made 12-of-35 three point attempts, both of which are season highs.

UIS committed just 10 turnovers in the 50-minute contest, playing a very clean game.

The Prairie Stars will look to bounce back after another tough loss as they welcome in #21 Wisconsin - Parkside on Saturday. The Rangers enter the contest coming off a 92-85 loss to McKendree, which snapped their 11-game winning streak. Game time is set for 3 pm in TRAC.
