Davi Austin (Newark, NJ) hit the game-winning shot with just one second left to send the Prairie Stars to the 2015 GLVC Tournament as the University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team defeated McKendree, 69-67, Thursday night at the Statham Center.
McKendree's Michael Jackson split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 67 with 33 seconds left. On the next possession, Austin split a pair of defenders and connected on a jumper in the paint to win the game.
UIS earned the 12th and final spot in the GLVC Tournament and will take on Lewis on Sunday.
The Prairie Stars led by as many as 19 points in the first half. With the score 14-9 in favor of UIS, the visitors broke the game open with a 17-3 run. Six different players scored during the run. The hosts responded with a run of their own, scoring 15 of the next 17 points to cut the deficit to just six, 33-27, at halftime.
Junior
Jamall Millison (Bolingbrook, Ill.) scored a team-high 14 points for the Prairie Stars. Junior
JJ Cravatta (Streator, Ill.) chipped in with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting and Austing added 10 points. Austin also grabbed a game-high five steals. Seven Prairie Stars scored at least seven points in the game.
UIS led for the first ten minutes of the second stanza. McKendree fought back to eventually tie the game at 52, and again at 55 with 8:33 left to play. The teams traded buckets over the next couple of minutes and the Prairie Stars seemed to take control of the game with a 7-0 run at the four-minute mark to take a seven-point lead. The hosts came back again to tie the game with seven straight points, setting up Austin's game-winner.
It is the second consecutive season that the Prairie Stars are the 12-seed in the GLVC Tournament.
