ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team's season ended in the first round of the GLVC Tournament against fifth-seeded Lewis, 70-52, on Sunday at Neil Carey Arena.
Junior
JJ Cravatta (Streator, Ill.) finished with a team-best 12 points with all coming from long range. Classmate
Jamall Millison (Bolingbrook, Ill.) and sophomore
Mark Weems (Chicago) each chipped in 11 points. Weems also finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
Lewis got off to a fast start against 12th-seeded UIS and held a double-figure lead by the 14-minute mark. The Stars pulled to within eight, 19-11, on back-to-back buckets from Millison.
The hosts owned a 43-28 advantage at the break and shot a blistering 62 percent in the opening stanza, while UIS went 40 percent from the floor.
In the second frame, Lewis took its biggest lead of the game, 58-38, on a lay in at 11:18 from Julian Lewis who finished with a double-double on 18 points and 13 rebounds. UIS was able to get within 12 on its final field goal of the game coming with 7:26 left. The Prairie Stars shot just 28 percent in the second stanza on 8-for-28.
The Flyers held a 40-27 edge off the glass and 16-8 advantage in second chance points. Lewis also scored 30 points in the paint to the Stars' eight.
Seniors
Dylan Sparkman (East Peoria, Ill.) and
Kentrell King (Chicago) finished their seasons against the Flyers. Sparkman grabbed six rebounds with two points, one assist and one steal. King finished with six points, seven assits and one steal.
The Prairie Stars finish their season 11-16 overall under first-year head coach
Bill Walker and return nine players for the 2015-16 season.
