SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Flyers took control of the game with a 14-0 run to start the second half as the University of Illinois Springfield women's basketball team fell to no. 2 Lewis, 64-37, Thursday evening at the Recreation and Athletic Center.
UIS trailed 25-24 at halftime behind a strong defensive performance. The Prairie Stars held the Flyers to just 36 percent shooting in the half and allowed the league's leading scorer in Jamie Johnson to score only three points on 1-of-7 shooting.
Freshman
Shelbi Patterson (Indianapolis, Ind.) led UIS at the break with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting and four assists. She finished the game with eight points.
Sophomore
Syerra Cunningham scored a team-high 10 points in the game on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. She also grabbed five boards. Junior
Meredith Marti (Indianapolis, Ind.) added nine points and sophomore
Caroline Kelty (River Forest, Ill.) chipped in with eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
The visiting Flyers took control of the game in the second half with a 14-0 run to open the period. A layup from Cunningham ended the drought for UIS at the 12:34 minute-mark, but Lewis continued its hot shooting with nine more points to make the score 48-26 with 7:48 left in the game.
The visitors shot 53 percent from the floor in the second half and stretched the lead to as many 28 in the period.
The Prairie Stars are back in action on Saturday against Wisconsin-Parkside for their final home game of the season.
