SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Rockhurst hit a triple with three seconds remaining to take down the University of Illinois Springfield women's basketball team, 53-50, on Saturday afternoon at TRAC.
With the score knotted at 50-all, the Hawks' Becca Strobbe threw up a trey with three ticks left to seal the victory for Rockhurst. UIS' next possession resulted in a turnover after an offensive foul was called.
The visitors led from start to the end of the first half with the Stars tying the game just once, on a three-pointer from
Caroline Kelty, with 10:36 on the clock. Rockhurst owned as much as a seven-point lead before UIS shrunk it to just one heading into halftime, 28-27.
Out of the break, a
Shelbi Patterson (Indianapolis) triple gave UIS its first lead of the game, 30-28. The game was then a back-and-forth affair over the next six minutes as the score was knotted once again at 39-all with 12:20 to play.
Jameeshia Armstrong (Chicago) started an 8-0 run with a three-pointer to give the Stars their biggest lead of the game, 44-39. During the stretch, UIS' final field goal of the half came at the 10:13 mark.
Rockhurst maintained its distance, allowing the home team to lead just once more on three free throws, but it was not enough as the Prairie Stars came up empty on six possessions in the final six minutes of the game.
Patterson was the only Prairie Star to reach double figures with 10 points, while
Syerra Cunningham (Beach Park, Ill.) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 14 rebounds. UIS shot just 31 percent from the floor and struggled from the line with a 12-for-19 outing.
For the Hawks, Mary Dineen scored 13 and Kendall Hart recorded 12 with eight rebounds. Lauren Meyers and Taylor Skala chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
UIS was hampered by 19 turnovers as Rockhurst scored 12 points off the miscues. The Hawks also used their 12 offensive boards to put back 12 points.
The Prairie Stars return to the court for the final full week of play on Thursday against Lewis. The Flyers are ranked No. 1 in the country and own a 24-1 mark on the season.
