SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A pair of free throws with two seconds remaining in double-overtime proved decisive as William Jewell edged the University of Illinois Springfield women's basketball team, 92-91, in double overtime Thursday evening at the Recreation and Athletic Center.
In the second overtime, the Prairie Stars took a one-point lead when freshman
Shelbi Patterson (Indianapolis, Ind.) knocked down a free throw with five seconds to go. On the ensuing possession, William Jewell's Christia Benton-Keys drew a foul with two seconds left and won the game for the Cardinals by making a pair of free throws.
Five Prairie Stars scored in double figures led by Patterson with 19 points, just one point shy of her career-high. She also dished out seven assists. Sophomore
Caroline Kelty (River Forest, Ill.) chipped in with 18 points, her most since scoring 21 back in November. She reeled in nine rebounds and finished with four assists.

Syerra Cunningham (Beach Park, Ill.) and junior
Jessica Warren (University Park, Ill.) both finished with double-doubles on the night. It was Cunningham's seventh of the season as she scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. She was 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Warren pulled down 11 boards to go along with 11 points and two blocks.
Junior
Morgan Knorr (Savannah, Mo.) rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts with a career-high 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting.
The Prairie Stars led by two at halftime, 35-33. The Springfield squad battled back from an 11-point deficit around the 10-minute mark. Warren and Cunningham led the team with eight points a-piece. UIS shot 45 percent in the period and held the Cardinals to just 36 percent shooting from the field. The hosts lost senior guard
Courtney Knuckles (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) to injury early in the game.
In the second period, the Cardinals used seven three-pointers to take back the lead. The visitors stretched the lead to seven, 61-54, just after the second media timeout in the half. The Prairie Stars rallied again over the next six minutes, eventually tying the game at 68 on a bucket from Kelty with 3:35 to go.
Another basket from Kelty with 30 seconds left in the game gave UIS a 74-73 lead. William Jewell's Hayli Jo Smith split a pair of free throws with six seconds to go to force overtime.
The Cardinals quickly jumped out to a five point lead in the overtime period. With her team trailing by five,
Caroline Kelty connected on a three-ball with 2:17 to go to cut the deficit to two. A layup from Patterson on the team's next possession tied the game and forced a second overtime.
UIS narrowly won the rebounding battle, 48-47, its most rebounds since grabbing 52 against Saint Joseph's back in January.
The Prairie Stars are back in action on Saturday to host Rockhurst at 1 p.m.
