Jamall Millison (Bolingbrook, Ill.) combined to score 43 points to lead the University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team to an 83-63 win against Cumberland at the Recreation and Athletic Center Friday night.
The duo combined to shoot 16-of-23 from the field and 5-for-8 from three point range. Austin's 22 points are a career-high for the point guard. He was on fire in the first half, as he scored 16 of his team's 44 points on 7-of-9 shooting. He added five assists and four steals.
The opening minutes of the game were back and forth as the score was tied twice and there were seven lead changes. The hosts held a 14-6 lead after a jumper from Millison at the 12:01 minute mark, but Cumberland came storming back with an 11-2 run to take the lead, 17-16.
Later in the half with the score 27-26 in favor of UIS, the Prairie Stars returned the favor with an 11-2 run of their own to open up a 10-point advantage. Senior
JJ Cravatta (Streator, Ill.) came into the game at the five-minute mark and made his mark late in the period. With just under a minute left until halftime, Cravatta drained a three pointer to give the host's a 41-30 lead. After the visitors responded with a layup, UIS held the ball for the final shot. Austin drove into the lane and passed to an open Cravatta in the corner who knocked his second three of the game as time expired.
The Prairie Stars shot a blistering 62 percent from the floor in the first half. Cumberland outrebounded UIS 15-10 in the period but turned the ball over 10 times as the Prairie Stars scored 18 points off of turnovers.
UIS carried its momentum into the second half and quickly built up a 20-point lead. Cumberland began chipping away and eventually worked its way to within 12 points, 63-51 at the 7:43 minute mark. After both teams turned the ball over, the Prairie Stars took off, outscoring the visitors 12-4 over the next four minutes to put the game out of reach. UIS increased its lead to as many as 23 in the final minutes as it cruised to the 83-63 win.
The win snaps a two-game skid for the Prairie Stars as they look to Sunday's game against the 7-1 Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers in Owensboro, Ky.
