Second Half Run Downs Prairie Stars, 78-69

RENSSELAER, Ind. - Hillsdale outscored the Prairie Stars 28-19 in the final 10:43 of the game to defeat the University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team, 78-69, Friday night at the St. Joseph's Tournament at the Scharf Fieldhouse.

A three-pointer from redshirt freshman Vince Walker (Ankeny, Iowa) gave the Prairie Stars a 50-48 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the game. After a game-tying layup on Hillsdale's next possession, the Chargers went on an 18-8 run over the next seven minutes to take a 68-58 lead.

A three-ball from transfer-junior Paxton Harmon (Warsaw, Ind.) cut the lead to seven, 68-61, but Hillsdale answered with a three of its own to push the lead back to 10. Only one field goal was made in the final 2:34 minutes of the game. Both teams traded free throws until a layup from UIS' JJ Cravatta (Streator, Ill.) with 11 seconds left  to make the final score 78-69.

The Prairie Stars shot 50 percent in the second period and 46 percent in the game but struggled to score down the stretch. In the final 1:50 of the game, the Springfield squad took only one shot from the floor until Cravatta's layup with 11 seconds remaining.

Senior Jamall Millison (Bolingbrook, Ill.) led the Prairie Stars with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, his best shooting performance of the young season. In the team's first four games, Millison shot a combined 9-for-33 from the floor (27 percent). Three other UIS players scored in double figures. Junior Richard Freeman (Indianapolis, Ind.) netted 13 points while Paxton Harmon and senior Jesse Tesmer (Greencastle, Ind.) added 10 points each.

The first 20 minutes of action were tight as the Prairie Stars never trailed by more than six points and took the lead after a three pointer from Millison made the score 23-21 at the 7:36 minute-mark. Another Millison jumper a minute later maintained the Prairie Stars' two-point advantage. With the score tied at 30, Hillsdale ended the half on an 8-2 run to take a 38-32 lead into the break.

Hillsdale's Ryan Badowski led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. He finished 6-of-11 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line.The Chargers dominated on the glass, winning the rebounding battle 38-27.

The Prairie Stars look to snap their two-game skid tomorrow in Rensselaer against Ohio Dominican at 6 p.m.
