SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Junior
Nikki Madoch highlighted the University of Illinois Springfield's 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-19) loss to UW-Parkside as she recorded 10 kills and hit .429 on Friday evening at The Recreation and Athletic Center.
Madoch (Algonquin, Ill.) led the team in kills with 10 on 21 attempts with just one error. She also recorded one ace on the night. Freshman
Lexi Hall (Champaign, Ill.) assisted on 17 of the Prairie Stars 40 kills, while senior
JoAnna Hoffman (Prospect Heights, Ill.) recorded 14 helpers.
Set one was a closely contested one that saw 16 tie scores and four lead changes. The Prairie Stars (3-6, 1-4 GLVC) were on the winning side for most of the stanza until an attack error tied the game at 23-all. From there the Rangers (6-4, 3-2 GLVC) put on the pressure and tallied three kills and forced an error to take the set, 27-25.
The Rangers continued their momentum into the second set and jumped out to a 14-6 lead, scoring five straight points on Megan Pekarek's serve. UIS pulled to within four, twice, but it was as close the game would get. Both teams struggled with the attack in the second set as UW-Parkside hit just .184, while UIS hit in the negative.
In the final set, UIS switched up its lineup and saw sophomore
Hailey Vitacco (Huntley, Ill.) record three kills on five attempts with no errors, but it was not enough as UWP owned the lead from start to finish. UIS pulled close, 11-10, on two straight kills, but the Rangers countered with the same to push their lead back to two. UW-Parkside hit a match-high .419 in the final set to take home the victory.
Jackie Langer topped UWP with 11 kills and hit .400 on the night, while Jenni Heller and Meghan Conley each recorded nine kills. Pekarek tallied a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs.
The Prairie Stars return to action on Saturday against Lewis. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
