Hot Hitting Shuts Down Prairie Stars

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team was shut down by a hot-hitting Lewis team, 3-0 (25-22, -15, -17) on Saturday afternoon at The Recreation and Athletic Center.

Lewis extends its winning streak to five games and moves to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in GLVC action. UIS falls to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in league play. The Prairie Stars have a quick turn around to prepare for GLVC rival McKendree on Tuesday, Sept. 30. All fans are encouraged to wear blue as we try to "Blue Out the Bearcats". First serve is set for 7 p.m. at TRAC.

Senior Shelby Geers (Urbana, Ill.) topped the team with seven kills, while sophomore Becca Stoczynski (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and senior JoAnna Hoffman (Prospect Heights, Ill.) each recorded five on the day with Stoczynski hitting a team-best .267.

The Prairie Stars battled in the first set, overcoming a five-point deficit to pull within one, 20-19 on a kill from junior Nikki Madoch (Algonquin, Ill.), but it was not enough as Lewis went on to take the set on a final kill from Alexis Davito who finished with 19 kills.

Set two saw four tie scores in the early going with the final one coming at 11-all. Three straight kills from the Flyers though swung the momentum back in their favor. UIS battled back to within one late in the set, 16-15, but Lewis used a 9-0 run to take the home team out and go up 2-0.

Lewis went up 5-0 in the third set and never looked back. UIS got as close as five several times, but it was Lewis' game to take.

Davito was lights out for the Flyers as she hit .548, making just two errors on 31 attempts. Aly Schneider joined Davito in double figures with 12 kills on 20 attempts with three errors. For the match, the Flyers hit .306, while holding UIS to just .096.
