SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The University of Illinois Springfield exploded its offense as it dominated visiting Millikin, 89-49, on Saturday afternoon in TRAC.
"I think Millkin came out ready to play, they were very intense and made their opening shots," said head coach
Bill Walker. "We then adjusted and tightened up our defense and that was the story of the game and helped us get our offense going."
The offense was sparked as four players scored in double figures with sophomore
Mark Weems (Chicago) and junior
Jamall Millison (Bolingbrook, Ill.) each tossing down 17 points. Weems went 6-for-9 from the floor while sinking five free throws and Millison was 7-for-13 including two triples. Junior
JJ Cravatta (Streator, Ill.) recorded 15 points with nine coming from long range. He also grabbed a season-best five boards in 19 minutes of play off the bench. Senior
Dylan Sparkman rounded out the double-digit scoring with 13 points and 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Sparkman was just one shy of matching his career high that he set as a sophomore.
UIS took over the paint scoring more than half of its points inside, while Millikin was able to score just six. The Prairie Stars also capitalized off of the Big Blue's 17 turnovers, scoring 21 points. From the floor, UIS was 36-for-64 for a season-best 56 percent shooting, but struggled from long range as it went 6-for-19 for a season-low 31 percent clip.
The Big Blue led for just one minute and 45 seconds as they tossed up the first three of the game, from there though it was the Prairie Stars game to take. UIS took a double-figure lead at 10:21 on a jumper from junior
Colin Blaydes (Chicago) and never looked back.
Millikin made it a four-point contest, 23-19, with a 6-1 run, but a trey from Millison swung the game back in the Prairie Stars' favor where it held a double figure lead for the rest of the contest. UIS took its biggest lead of the contest after sophomore
Xavier Todd forced a turnover and tossed it to junior
Sammie Elem (Chicago) for the lay up to make it an 89-42 contest with less than two minutes to go.
Illinois Springfield owned the edge off the glass, 47-35, as it has outrebounded its opponents in all five of its victories.
TJ Griffin, the Big Blue's leading scorer for the season, topped the team with 15 points, while Jacob Kueker recorded 14 and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Millikin struggled from the floor, hitting just 23 percent of its shot on 15-of-63 shooting and managed to go just 19 percent (4-21) from long range.
The Prairie Stars have just a few days to prepare for St. Catharine on Tuesday, Dec. 9. UIS welcomes the Patriots to TRAC at 7 p.m. for its third consecutive home game.
