Tyrone Johnson is in his first season as an assistant coach for the University of Illinois Springfield men’s basketball team.
 
Johnson comes to UIS from Lincoln College where he was an assistant coach for four years in two different stints. In 2017-18, he helped the team go 23-7 and be ranked as high as No. 2 in the country. He was also an assistant from 2013-2016, and helped the team go 46-48 in that span. During his time at Lincoln, Johnson was the lead recruiter who coached and mentored two All-Americans in Aaron Simpson (2013-14) and Trayvon Taylor (2017-18).
 
In 2016-17, Johnson was an assistant at Daley College, and in 2012-13 he was with the South Suburban College staff. He helped Daley win 15 games, its most since its 2011-12 season. At South Suburban, he helped the team go 32-5 and be ranked as high as second in the country. He coached an All-American and Player of the Year in Mike Harris.
 
He started his coaching career in 2011-12 as a student assistant at Illinois State University. He was a part of a program that won 21 games and finished in the top-four in the Missouri Valley Conference.
 
Johnson has also coached one of the top AAU teams in the Midwest, Team Y&R, from 2014-18. He was also a prep coach in Chicago at Thornton Fractional South High School.
 
Johnson is a Chicago native and graduate of Thornton Fractional South. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Sport Management from Lincoln.
