The UIS women's soccer team lost to Missouri-St. Louis 4-1 on Saturday evening. The Prairie Stars carried a 1-0 lead into halftime, but UMSL scored all four of its goals after the break.
Mallory Herber gave the Prairie Stars the first-half breakthrough at 43:03, scoring off
Bridget Lyons' assist for the lead. Earlier, UIS withstood repeated UMSL chances, including three shots off the woodwork and two saves by
Gigi Yurevich before the goal. Yurevich made another save at 44:27, and the Prairie Stars took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Illinois Springfield was tied 1-1 deep into the second half behind three saves from Yurevich, including one during an UMSL attacking stretch from 61:11 to 67:57. The score remained 1-1 until the 80th minute when UMSL capitalized, scoring at 79:54, 81:08 and 88:00 to pull away for a 4-1 final. The Prairie Stars earned late corners at 80:20 and 85:58 and put a
Sophia Davila shot on goal at 89:32, but could not cut into the deficit.
Herber scored and finished with two shots, putting one on goal. Lyons recorded an assist and added one shot. Goalkeeper
Gigi Yurevich made six saves over 90 minutes.
"Tonight was not our best performance, but we were still able to take away some positives," said head coach
Scott Myers. "UMSL was well prepared and we were able to get out to an early start with a great opportunity in the first minute. We finished the half with
Mallory Herber collecting her third goal of the season, and taking a 1-0 lead into the half was a small victory against one of the best teams in the region. Gigi put up a terrific performance in goal for us yet again, making some key saves. We took some chances late in the game that left us a little exposed, and UMSL was able to take advantage. We will take this loss and learn from it so we can continue to get better as the season continues. We have two quick games this week, Wednesday and Friday, and it will be great to get back to our home field as we have been on the road for three games now."
