2026 UIS Men’s Track & Field Season Recap

The UIS men's track & field team concluded its 2026 season in May, focusing heavily on its traditional strength in distance events. Throughout the indoor and outdoor seasons, UIS relied on standout performances from athletes like Matt Padilla and Isaac Cortes. The team's standout athletes excelled on some of the season's biggest stages, including the Bryan Clay Invitational and the GLVC Championships.

At the GLVC Indoor and Outdoor Championships, UIS had a notable presence in the 3K, 5K, and 10K The team displayed resilience as they competed against a highly competitive conference field. In the outdoor GLVC Championships, Matt Padilla delivered impressive performances, placing 4th in the 5K with a time of 14:51 and 5th in the 10K clocking in at 30:36. During the indoor season, Isaac Cortes led the team with a 10th place finish in the 5K, posting a time of 15:05.

Throughout the season, UIS runners made their mark in conference rankings. In the indoor season, multiple runners placed within the top 25 for the 3K and 5K events, with Isaac Cortes leading the team in the 5K with his best time of 14:56. In outdoor rankings, Padilla led a group of four runners in the top 25 for the 5K and six in the top 25 for the 10K within the GLVC.

The 2026 season marked the end of an era for UIS men’s track & field as a distance-focused team, as the program prepares to expand into a more comprehensive track & field squad in 2026-27, broadening its competitive scope. The accomplishments of the season provide a strong foundation for that transition and continued growth next year.
