Celebrating 15 Years of NCAA Division II Membership at UIS: 2023 Women’s Golf

As part of UIS Athletics' 15 Years of NCAA Division II Membership celebration, the department is highlighting 15 standout teams and 15 standout student-athletes who have shaped the program's Division II era. Each week, UIS features one team and one player, honoring the accomplishments, championship moments, and legacy-building performances that have defined Prairie Stars Athletics.

The 2023 UIS women's golf team achieved a historic breakthrough, capturing the program's first GLVC Championship and making a strong showing in the NCAA Division II postseason. The Prairie Stars finished the season with consistent performances across multiple tournaments, highlighted by top finishes at the Dan Salisbury Memorial, Flyer Invitational, and Lady Panther Invitational.

UIS earned a spot in the GLVC Championship Match Play after finishing third in stroke play for the sixth time since 2016. The Prairie Stars defeated the No. 2 Missouri-St. Louis Tritons 3-2 in the semifinals — a victory that marked their first head to head win against UMSL since October 2020 — before facing the ten-time defending GLVC champion Indianapolis Greyhounds in the final.

The championship match came down to the wire. Freshman Elaine Grant led her opponent through 25 of 36 holes, while graduate transfer Bobbi Uhl delivered clutch putting under pressure, sinking a seven-foot putt on the 18th hole to secure the decisive fourth point. Another first-year graduate transfer, Heather McLean, was paired with the 2022 GLVC Champion and led her opponent on all 18 holes, winning her match 72-79 in the finals. UIS' 3-2 victory ended Indianapolis's decade-long championship streak and earned the Prairie Stars their first conference title.

Heather McLean was named All-GLVC, and Michael Leotta the GLVC Coach of the Year.

Following the GLVC Championship, UIS hosted the NCAA Division II East Regional at Panther Creek Country Club. The team of Heather McLean, Elaine Grant, Isabelle Segal, Ira Joshi, and Sara Prieto totaled 938 for 54 holes, finishing eighth overall—just four strokes behind 7th-place Ferris State and nine strokes out of sixth. McLean led the way in ninth individually with scores of 76-73-71, setting the 54-hole program record. "I wasn't thinking about making nationals or breaking any records," McLean said. "I just wanted to shoot the lowest score for my team."

McLean went on to compete at the NCAA Division II National Championships at Fox Run Golf Course in Eureka, Mo., where she tied for 82nd place after rounds of 78-81-78. Her record-setting appearances and sharp postseason play established her as one of the top individual performers in program history.

The 2023 season showcased both emerging talent and veteran leadership. Elaine Grant made a significant impact as a freshman, while Uhl and McLean anchored the team with poise and clutch performances under pressure. The championship run was a testament to the depth, resilience, and focus of the 2023 squad.

Defined by a long-awaited GLVC title and strong individual performances, the 2023 Prairie Stars women's golf team broke through after years of knocking on the door, coming together at the right time to take the title and push for a spot on the national stage.
