The UIS men's soccer team lost to UIndy by a score of 2-1 Wednesday night during Homecoming Week. The Prairie Stars generated five of their seven shots after halftime but were outshot 7-3 on goal.
The Prairie Stars kept UIndy off the board in the first half, with
Kevin Kardel making three saves as the visitors generated repeated shots.
Robin Lemke Bergseth put Illinois Springfield's early chance on frame in the third minute, but the half would end without a goal.
UIS answered late in the second half when
Gentil Selemani scored from
Cameron Frye's assist at 86:21, cutting UIndy's lead to 2-1. Earlier, Kardel made saves in the 75th and 80th minutes as the Prairie Stars held through a UIndy attacking stretch before UIndy added a second goal at 84:04. The goal launched a late push in which the Prairie Stars tested UIndy multiple times, but the match ended with UIndy ahead 2-1.
Selemani scored the Prairie Stars' goal, putting his only shot on frame and bringing his season total to five goals. Kardel played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves. Lemke Bergseth led UIS with three shots, including one on goal.
"First half was probably our best half of soccer all season," said head coach
Graham Shaw. "In the second half, we gave away two cheap goals. We kept fighting, but unfortunately couldn't get level. We now prepare for Saturday against Maryville."
Up next, the Prairie Stars travel to St. Louis to face Maryville on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2:30 p.m.
