Men's Soccer Begins Key Week With Homecoming Match

10/6/2026 3:00:00 PM

Illinois Springfield men's soccer will host Indianapolis Wednesday evening for its annual Homecoming match before traveling to Maryville for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff Saturday.

Wednesday's match is set for 6:30 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium and follows the women's soccer Homecoming matchup against Indianapolis at 4 p.m., creating a Prairie Stars soccer doubleheader. The Homecoming game day will feature tailgates at both ends of Kiwanis Stadium, Homecoming T-shirt giveaways for UIS students and boom stick and mini pennant giveaways for all fans.

The Prairie Stars enter the week at 1-7-3 overall and 1-4-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play after battling to a pair of draws last week. Illinois Springfield played Upper Iowa to a 2-2 draw at home before earning a 1-1 draw on the road at William Jewell.

With six conference matches remaining, including four at home, the Prairie Stars remain within reach of the GLVC tournament field. Illinois Springfield currently sits 11th in the conference standings, with the top eight advancing to the postseason. The Prairie Stars will have an opportunity to make up ground during the final stretch of the regular season, which includes a three-match homestand later this month.

Indianapolis enters Wednesday's match at 5-3-4 overall and 4-2-3 in GLVC play, sitting fifth in the conference standings. The Greyhounds split their two matches last week, falling 2-0 at Maryville before bouncing back with a 2-1 road win at Missouri S&T.

Joey Longo leads Indianapolis with five goals and 11 points through 12 matches. Shayne Abrams and Hugo Paturel have each added two goals, while six other Greyhounds have found the net once. Rick Lammerts has started all 12 matches in goal for Indianapolis, posting a 1.00 goals-against average, 35 saves and a .745 save percentage. He has recorded four shutouts this season.

Illinois Springfield will face another one of the GLVC's top teams Saturday when it travels to Maryville. The Saints enter the week at 8-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play, good for second in the league behind Drury. Maryville's only conference loss came Saturday in a 1-0 result at Rockhurst, while its other conference blemish was a 2-2 draw at Truman State. The Saints have also shown an ability to produce big offensive numbers, including a 10-2 victory at Southwest Baptist on Sept. 16.

Omar Cilic leads Maryville with five goals in eight games, while Ahmed Suljagic has four goals and Axton Anom has three goals and an assist. The Saints have several additional experienced scoring options throughout their lineup.

Asgrimur Vidisson has started all 12 matches in goal, recording a 0.96 goals-against average, 43 saves and a .796 save percentage.

The Prairie Stars will look to take advantage of every opportunity during the final weeks of the regular season as they chase a spot in the GLVC tournament.
