The Illinois Springfield women's soccer team takes its four-game unbeaten streak on the road Wednesday, visiting Lewis at 5 p.m. before returning home Saturday to host Southwest Baptist at noon for its annual Cancer Awareness Game.
UIS (7-4-2, 5-3-2 GLVC) went 3-0-1 over its last four matches, including a scoreless draw against Maryville last week. Defender Riley Lloyd contributed a goal and an assist during the week, while the shutout against the Saints highlighted the Prairie Stars' defensive execution.
Head coach Scott Myers pointed to the defensive effort and the team's ability to carry out its game plan as key takeaways from the Maryville match. The recent stretch has moved UIS into seventh in the GLVC standings, just ahead of Rockhurst and Quincy. Missouri-St. Louis leads the conference at 9-0-1 and has clinched the first tournament berth, with McKendree and Missouri S&T also near the top of the standings.
Lewis enters Wednesday's matchup at 5-7-1 overall and 2-7-1 in conference play, sitting 10th in the GLVC. The Flyers earned a 1-0 road win over Lincoln last week before dropping a 3-2 decision to Missouri S&T.
Lewis averages 1.31 goals per game while allowing 1.77. Anna Linsler leads the Flyers with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Talia Kaempf has added seven points, recording two goals and three assists, while the team's scoring production has come from several players across the roster.
Lewis has split its goalkeeping duties between two players for much of the season, with Andrea Wie seeing recent action. Wie made three saves against Missouri S&T.
Southwest Baptist enters Saturday's matchup at 5-7-2 overall and 3-6-1 in GLVC play, sitting 11th in the standings. The Bearcats opened last week with a commanding 5-0 win over William Jewell before falling 3-1 at Quincy. Saturday's contest will be the the middle of a three-game road stretch for SBU.
Saturday's home match will recognize cancer awareness and the people and families affected by cancer. The Prairie Stars will welcome representatives from the Tessa Sutton Foundation, which is connected to the program's cancer awareness efforts, along with Springfield Clinic, a supporter of UIS Athletics.
The game provides an opportunity for the UIS community to come together in support of cancer awareness while cheering on the Prairie Stars. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at Kiwanis Stadium.
