UIS Women's Soccer Falls Short Against Lewis

UIS Women's Soccer (7-5-2, 5-4-2) lost to Lewis (6-7-1, 5-5-1) 1-0 Wednesday. The Prairie Stars put seven of their 10 shots on goal but were shut out as Lewis scored the match's only goal in the second half.

UIS generated six shots in the first half, including saved attempts from Mallory Herber, Kalli Drexler, Riley Lloyd and Josie Sparks. Lloyd and Herber each had early looks in the opening seven minutes, while Gigi Yurevich made two saves to keep Lewis off the board. The half ended scoreless.

The Prairie Stars kept the second half scoreless through a Lewis push from 64:47 to 73:45, absorbing two corner kicks and three shots, including a team save on Abbie Delong's attempt. Lewis broke through at 73:53 on Anna Sainato's goal, and Illinois Springfield followed with a Kenzie Coleman shot saved by Andrea Wie and an Autumn Diduch shot stopped by a team save. The half finished with Lewis ahead 1-0, which stood as the final score.

Yurevich played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with three saves. Diduch recorded two shots and put both on goal. Herber added two shots, including one on frame. Lloyd also tallied two shots with one on goal.

"Tough loss tonight," said head coach Scott Myers."I'm proud of our fight til the end, but it just wasn't enough to get the ball in the back of the net. I thought we did a great job of creating ball movement and getting some good looks on goal, but we were not able to find the ball high enough on the field to create better chances. On the flip side, we did a really good job of team defending, though we gave them one moment to capitalize and they did. The team will regroup and get back at it this Saturday at Kiwanis to celebrate our cancer awareness match against Southwest Baptist."

Up next, the Prairie Stars soccer team hosts Southwest Baptist at noon Saturday, Oct. 17 for its annual Cancer Awareness Game.
