UIS Women’s Soccer Falls at Rockhurst on Friday Night

The Illinois Springfield women's soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision on the road Friday night against Rockhurst. The Prairie Stars moved to 1-3-3 overall and 0-2-2 in GLVC play.

After nearly 20 scoreless minutes, the Hawks broke through with a goal tucked just inside the right post following a corner kick.

Rockhurst doubled its lead before halftime, taking the ball the length of the field and finishing a long build-up with a strike past starting goalkeeper Gigi Yurevich.

The Hawks added three goals in the second half—one immediately after the break off a cross, one on a free kick from just outside the box, and the fifth following a defensive breakdown inside the penalty area.

UIS got on the board with just under 27 minutes to play as freshman Addison Wittenberg rocketed in her first collegiate goal from distance. Mallory Herber assisted on the score.

Rockhurst finished with a 23-13 edge in total shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. UIS made its attempts count with seven shots on goal compared to 10 for the Hawks. Kalli Drexler led the Stars with four shots, three on frame, while five other players registered a shot on goal.

Yurevich started in net and made five saves, while Makenna Miller closed the match with 21 minutes of relief.

"We were very good in spurts, but some simple mistakes on defense allowed Rockhurst to capitalize and put us on the back foot." Coach Myers said. "I'm really proud of how we stuck to the plan at times, but to find a win we have to be more clinical in our defending. Credit to Rockhurst for finishing some quality chances and executing their game plan."
