The Illinois Springfield men's soccer team is ready for a full week of GLVC play that begins with Friday night's 7:30 p.m. homecoming matchup against longtime rival Quincy. The Prairie Stars then head to Kirksville, Mo., for a noon road contest at Truman State on Sunday.
Illinois Springfield (1-2-1, 0-1 GLVC)
Corne Boshoff and
Jack Hudson lead the Prairie Stars with two goals apiece, while several other players have contributed single goals or assists. UIS will look to generate more scoring chances as the GLVC slate continues.
The defense has been a strength in the early season, highlighted by securing a 2-2 draw with then-No. 7 Saginaw Valley State. In Sunday's conference opener, UIS came up just short in a 2-1 battle with William Jewell at Kiwanis Stadium. With league play picking up, team chemistry and consistency will be key in the weeks ahead.
Quincy (2-1-1, 0-1 GLVC)
The Hawks opened GLVC play with a 1-0 setback against Lewis, with the game's only goal coming on a penalty kick. Quincy generated steady pressure in the second half, finishing with seven shots and eight corner kicks, but could not find the equalizer.
Freshman goalkeeper Jake Offerman has started all four games, recording 11 saves and allowing just three goals.
UIS and Quincy share a long history dating back to their NAIA days. Since joining NCAA Division II and the GLVC in 1996, the Hawks have made 21 GLVC Tournament appearances, winning one tournament (2011) and two regular-season titles. They reached the NCAA national championship match in 2014. UIS joined the GLVC in 2010 and has qualified for the conference tournament eight times, advancing to the title match twice. The Stars captured the GLVC regular-season crown in 2023. This year, UIS was selected eighth in the GLVC preseason poll, while Quincy was picked 11th. Friday's matchup sets up as a marquee homecoming clash between two teams eager to notch their first league win.
Truman State (1-1-1, 0-1 GLVC)
On Sunday, UIS travels to face Truman State. The Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 decision to Indianapolis in their GLVC opener despite a strong performance in goal from Owen Robben, who has made 16 saves and allowed six goals this season.
Truman generated second-half opportunities against the Greyhounds, including a crossbar strike from Jacob Panagos and late shots by Frank Robinson and Merritt Gregory. The Bulldogs have three different goalscorers this season, with one assist credited to Spencer Slayton.
UIS earned a 2-0 home victory over Truman almost exactly one year ago.
Homecoming at UIS
Homecoming week features events across campus, capped by Friday's soccer doubleheader against Quincy and Saturday's volleyball match against Maryville. Athletics alumni are invited to gather at the alumni tent inside the soccer facility, and for this special occasion, beverage sales will be available during Friday night's game.
The bonfire and fireworks originally scheduled to follow the men's match have been postponed due to dry weather and will be rescheduled.
