Tye Banks Leads UIS to Victory Over Maryville

UIS men's basketball (7-2, 4-0 GLVC) defeated Maryville (1-6, 0-2 GLVC) 81-68 on Saturday at TRAC. The Prairie Stars capitalized on free throws, making 23 of 30 attempts, while Maryville struggled with turnovers, committing 14.

Illinois Springfield opened the first half with a strong start, highlighted by Isaiah Davis sinking back-to-back three-pointers within the first two minutes. The team capitalized on turnovers, with Britton Dutton and Jordan Rice combining for multiple steals and assists, fueling a 6-point lead early on.

Midway through the half, the Prairie Stars maintained momentum with effective ball movement, as Tye Banks contributed with key jumpers and Rice added a fast-break layup. The home team demonstrated defensive resilience, limiting Maryville's second-chance points and outpacing them in points off turnovers.

In the closing minutes of the half, the Prairie Stars extended their lead with Dutton hitting consecutive three-pointers, assisted by Rice. Despite a late basket by Maryville at the buzzer, the half ended with Illinois Springfield leading 33-28.

The Prairie Stars began the second half with a strong push, Alex Stell assisted Tye Banks on a layup and Britton Dutton knocked down a three-pointer shortly after, prompting an early timeout by Maryville. UIS expanded its advantage with consistent scoring drives and defensive stops, including a key steal by Stell that led to another scoring opportunity.

The team capitalized on Maryville's turnovers, converting them into points and maintaining pressure. Despite Maryville's efforts to close the gap, Illinois Springfield's efficient free-throw shooting and offensive rebounds ensured they stayed ahead.

The Prairie Stars outscoring Maryville 48-40 in the second half, and won with a total score of 81-68.

Tye Banks led the team with 22 points, converting 8 of 13 field goals and sinking 6 of 8 from the free-throw line. Jordan Rice added 20 points, going 12 for 15 at the charity stripe and dishing out seven assists. Britton Dutton contributed 14 points, including four three-pointers, and recorded two steals. Isaiah Davis finished with 12 points, making all three of his 3-point attempts.

The Prairie Stars stand at 7-2 overall and 4-0 in GLVC play. Maryville holds a 1-6 overall record and is 0-2 in GLVC competition.

"I'm very pleased with the toughness and grit we showed today," said head coach Matt Brock. "The fourth game in eight days is not easy. I thought the first part of the second half was key, as we extended the lead to double digits and created separation. We got great minutes from our bench, particularly Colin Schuler and Marlon Williams. I'm very proud of our guys as we head into finals week."
