UIS Men's Soccer Secures 2-1 Victory Over Upper Iowa

The UIS men's soccer team (3-11-3, 2-10-2) secured a 2-1 victory over Upper Iowa (4-11-2, 3-9-2) on the road on Sunday, with the winning goal coming in the second half of the final game of the season.

UIS got off to a strong start as Corne Boshoff scored in the 5th minute with a stunning 20-yard free kick, giving the Prairie Stars an early lead against a team that had started the match with heavy pressure. Goalkeeper Landon Amick was pivotal, making a remarkable save from his knees on a close-range shot in the 7th minute and recording multiple saves throughout the first half to help maintain the advantage.

Upper Iowa answered in the 40th minute when Alejandro Sanchez scored off an assist from Jeremiah Goko on a fast-paced play, tying the game 1-1. The first half ended with the teams deadlocked.

The game's decisive moment came in the 62nd minute when Robin Lemke Bergseth scored, putting UIS back in front 2-1. Amick played a critical role in maintaining the advantage with key saves, including a stop against Eduardo Gomez Montt's shot in the 70th minute. UIU managed to create many good chances, even securing three consecutive corners with under 10 minutes to play. Despite Upper Iowa's persistent attempts, the Prairie Stars held firm, concluding the second half and the match with a 2-1 victory.

Amick totaled eight saves, ensuring the Prairie Stars secured a win while facing 20 shots.

"First, I want to congratulate all the seniors on this team," said head coach Graham Shaw. "Their effort and commitment to the program has never been in question, and I was pleased they earned a win to close their careers. This game reflected a strong combination of our soccer ability, hard work, and determination. The first half, we were unlucky to go in at 1-1, as we controlled much of the game against a team that was very direct and used the windy conditions whenever possible. We showed a lot of fight to maintain the 2-1 lead, which we were able to do."

2025 UIS Men's Soccer
The UIS men's soccer team concluded the 2025 season with a 3-11-1 overall record and a 2-10-2 mark in the GLVC. Under the guidance of second-year head coach Graham Shaw, the team focused on development and building a foundation for future success.

Throughout the season, UIS Men's Soccer saw promising performances from its key players. Freshman Robin Lemke Bergseth emerged as a consistent goal scorer, leading the team with six goals. Senior Corne Boshoff and sophomore transfer Jack Hudson also contributed significantly, each netting five goals. These student-athletes were instrumental in securing crucial victories, including a notable come-from-behind 3-1 win against Purdue Northwest and a conference road victory at Truman State.

The Prairie Stars, with a lineup dominated by underclassmen, faced challenges but gained valuable experience that will serve them well in future seasons. Coach Shaw emphasized the importance of this developmental phase, describing the team's performance as a stepping stone toward the program's long-term goals. "This group has gained valuable experience this season, and despite the challenges we faced, it has made us stronger as we look ahead to the spring and continue building the long-term future of the men's soccer program," Shaw said.
