UIS Women's Soccer Battles Hard In Close Match Against Maryville

Box Score UIS women's soccer fell to Maryville on Friday at Kiwanis Stadium by a score of 2-1, now holding a record of 3-7-3, 2-6-2 in conference play. 

Despite a defensive start, the Prairie Stars earned three corner kicks in the first half. The UIS defense, anchored by goalkeeper Gigi Yurevich, held firm and prevented the Saints from capitalizing on their lone shot by Gina Catanzaro, which went wide left in the 27th minute.

The Prairie Stars maintained a strong defensive stance, preserving the scoreless tie heading into the halftime break.

The second half began with UIS seeking to capitalize on its home field advantage. However, the Saints struck first with a goal by Sophia Carter in the 53rd minute, putting the visitors ahead. UIS quickly responded when Abby Roy found the back of the net in the 59th minute, leveling the score at 1-1.

Despite the equalizer, Maryville regained the lead just a minute later with a goal from Elsa Nilson-Hurtig, assisted by Ashlyne Hunt. The Prairie Stars continued to press forward, with Mallory Herber testing the opposing goalkeeper, but the team was unable to find another breakthrough. The half concluded with the Saints maintaining a narrow 2-1 lead.

Yurevich played the full match between the posts, making two saves while facing 10 shots. Herber recorded two shots, with one being on goal, contributing to the offensive efforts.

Looking ahead, the Prairie Stars will host McKendree on Sunday, Oct. 19. The match will take place at Kiwanis Stadium, with the action beginning at 12:00 p.m.
