The Illinois Springfield women's soccer team capped off a successful weekend with a 1-0 road win over Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. The Prairie Stars improved to 3-6-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the GLVC, earning back-to-back victories for the first time this season.
"I was very proud of our effort and adjustments today. UMSL is very well-coached and earning points on the road is very difficult in the GLVC," said head coach
Scott Myers. "I am proud of our team for handling the pressure and attack from UMSL. We will get back at it this coming weekend and get to work against Maryville and McKendree."
The first half featured back-and-forth play but no scoring. Both teams created early chances before UMSL controlled a stretch of possession midway through the period, firing off five shots in a five-minute span. UIS settled in defensively after that onslaught, keeping the Tritons off the board as the match went to halftime scoreless.
In the 61st minute,
Mallory Herber broke the deadlock after being awarded a penalty kick. The sophomore calmly converted from the spot to give UIS a 1-0 lead — her second goal of the weekend.
UMSL continued to press, finishing the match with a 21-7 edge in total shots and a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks, but the Prairie Stars' back line and goalkeeper
Gigi Yurevich held firm to preserve the shutout. Yurevich tallied six saves in the win, her second clean sheet of the season.
UIS placed four shots on goal in the match, which came from Herber,
Rachel Riney,
Kalli Drexler, and
Madelyn Festerling.
There were no cards issued in the game.
