The University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team heads into the third weekend of the season with the GLVC regular season beginning at Kiwanis Stadium. The Prairie Stars face regionally ranked Maryville on Friday at 5:00 p.m., and finish off the weekend against Missouri S&T on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
UIS (0-1-3)
UIS is still searching for its first win of the 2023 season, as the Stars faced two tough in-region GLIAC opponents last week.
On Friday night against Michigan Tech, the Stars tied 1-1 in a back-and-forth contest. Michigan Tech had a slight advantage in shots, leading 11 to 9, and shots on goal, leading 5 to 4. Both teams had 9 corner kicks on the night, which made for constant opportunities. UIS took the lead in the 57th minute as the ball fell to
Maggie Joos in the box and she fired in her first collegiate goal. The lead wouldn't even last a full minute as Michigan Tech scored a header from a corner kick the ensuing possession.
On Sunday the Stars came up against regionally ranked Northern Michigan, and ultimately fell 2-0. The match was even in terms of shots, both recorded 11, but Northern Michigan registered 10 on target while UIS only registered 3. Two second half goals from the Wildcats led them to victory in Springfield.
Maryville (2-1-1)
Maryville comes off a 2-0 weekend at home, which sees them appear at 8th in the Midwest regional rankings. The Saints faced three nationally ranked teams in a row to start the 2023 season, losing, drawing, and winning one each.
Last weekend the Saints won both matches they had in St. Louis, with the win on Thursday coming against 18 ranked Cedarville. Maryville has only allowed three goals on the year so far, and shut out both opponents last weekend. Lexi Gentry is currently their top scorer on the year with two goals.
UIS vs Maryville History
UIS currently holds a 4-9 record against Maryville. In the last five meetings between the two, UIS has only won once. All four wins against Maryville have come in matches played in Springfield.
Missouri S&T (1-0-2)
The Miners earned their first win of the 2023 season on Sunday over Missouri Southern. The Miners have scored six goals in three games, including five different goal-scorers. Amelia Muno leads the way with 2 goals while Beth Roberts has registered a goal and 2 assists.
Sunday's win against Missouri Southern was a relatively even game throughout, but the Miners three goal lead was too much for the Lions to overcome.
Missouri S&T travels to Quincy on Friday night to start their GLVC season.
UIS vs Missouri S&T History
UIS holds a 7-7 record against Missouri S&T all-time. Both teams have won twice in the previous four meetings. In the 2022 season the Stars won 3-0 in dominating fashion against the Miners in Springfield.
