The UIS men's golf team competed in 54 holes of stroke play over the first two days of the GLVC Men's Golf Championships on Sunday and Monday. Freshman
Alex Seibal tied for fifth to lead the Prairie Stars to a seventh place finish. UIS put together one of its best GLVC finishes with a five-man team of three freshmen and two sophomores.
The Prairie Stars fired rounds of 322, 300, and 311 to move up in the standings throughout the rounds. Round two was delayed until Monday after the first round was played through windy weather on Sunday. UIS was nine strokes back from Indianapolis and four strokes ahead of William Jewell, who carded a 296 final round.
Alex Seibal carded a career best two-under 70 in his second round to climb seven spots and put himself in All-GLVC contention. The Tempe, Ariz. native finished T5 to make the league's first team and is the first freshman in UIS golf program history to do so. Four of six athletes that finished ahead of or tied with Seibal came from Missouri-St. Louis, and three hold NCAA DII top-100 rankings.
Freshman
Daniel Edwards moved up twelve places with a 74 in round two to finish 31st. He led stroke play at the tournament with 37 pars, including 20 in a row on Monday. Sophomore transfer
JJ Kim was close by with a T32 finish.
Julien Babineau and
Tom Bumann finished T48 and 55th, respectively.
The top four teams, Missouri-St. Louis, Missouri S&T, McKendree and Maryville, will move on to medal/match play on Tuesday for the team title. All four teams are featured in the most recent NCAA DII Regional Rankings.
All-GLVC awards including the remaining five all-conference spots, Freshman of the Year, Coach of the Year, and GLVC Player of the Year will be announced after the completion of the Championship.
