The University of Illinois Springfield softball team completed a 3-1 weekend at the Springfield Invitational with two thrilling wins over the Davenport Panthers.
GAME ONE
The Prairie Stars started play on Sunday with a two-run first inning in a game that would eventually go to extra innings. UIS and Davenport entered the sixth inning tied 3-3, and another run was not scored in the matchup until the Panthers sent two runners across home plate in the top of the tenth inning. The Prairie Stars were able to tie it 5-5 with a two RBI single by
Ramsey Armstrong. Davenport secured just one run in the eleventh before UIS claimed the game with two runs in their half of the inning.
UIS stole eight bases in game one, including two apiece by
Rosie Bartletti and
Reagan Miles.
Taylor Zawacki (4-3) earned the win with eleven strikeouts in six innings.Â
GAME TWO
UIS carried momentum into the second game of the doubleheader with seven runs in the second inning. Davenport eventually cut down the UIS lead with three runs in the fourth inning, and tied the game with three more runs in the top of the sixth. The Prairie Stars matched that effort in their last at-bat to come away with the win, and
Madelyn Tompkins (2-0) earned her second win of the season.
Ella Brinkley batted .579 (11-for-19) on the weekend. Brinkley came away with seven runs and two RBI.
The Prairie Stars, now 12-5, will travel to Clermont, Fla. for The Spring Games softball tournament. UIS will play 10 games from March 9-14 at the world's largest collegiate softball event.
