The University of Illinois Springfield softball team won 6-of-10 games at The Spring Games tournament in Florida over the past week, improving their record to 18-9.
The Prairie Stars started off with three straight wins, including two over Midwest region opponents Walsh and Cedarville.
UIS fell in two of their last three to Minnesota Crookston and Purdue Northwest, then ended competition with an 8-0 win over Franklin Pierce.
Jillian Mathis earned GLVC Player of the Week honors for her offensive performances over the first three days of the tournament. The senior outfielder got out only five times in those six games, scoring seven runs with three doubles and one triple. Mathis had a batting average of .722 with multi-hit games in the first five games. In the sixth game, Mathis walked three times while going 1-1. Mathis helped the Prairie Stars to a 4-2 start on the road trip.
The UIS offense batted .291, scoring 52 runs in ten games. The Prairie Stars combined for 12 doubles and four triples.
The pitching staff allowed an average of 6.7 hits and just two runs per game, while recording a game average of 5.1 strikeouts.
Reagan Miles improved her record to 6-2, and
Madelyn Tompkins remains undefeated at 3-0.
The Prairie Stars are set to start conference play this weekend, the schedule is subject to change due to weather.
