Prairie Stars Earn Split on Day One of Springfield Invitational

The University of Illinois Springfield softball team is now 10-5 after one day of its Springfield Invitational. The Prairie Stars will continue competition on Sunday at 12 a.m. with a doubleheader against Davenport. 

GAME ONE
The Prairie Stars started the day with a 3-2 loss to Purdue Northwest. The Purdue Northwest Pride led the contest 3-1 before UIS scored again in the bottom of the fourth. The final three innings were scoreless for both teams, and the Prairie Stars left three on base upon the close of the seventh inning. 

Ella Brinkley led the offense with three hits and a run, and Danielle Dennis had two hits, one run, and an RBI of her own. Taylor Zawacki picked up the loss after allowing six hits and three runs. Zawacki recorded eleven strikeouts in the outing. 

GAME TWO
Ella Brinkley scored in the bottom of the third on two singles, an error, and a sacrifice bunt to put the first point on the board. Brinkley scored again in the bottom of the fifth, Danielle Dennis had the RBI for each run. Hillsdale responded with two runs in the next inning to tie the contest. The UIS pitching staff allowed Hillsdale just one hit for the remainder of the matchup. Emma Garcia singled and advanced to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Kelsie Burrows. Ella Brinkley singled and Emma Garcia scored the third run. 

UIS had 11 hits compared to Hillsdale's 7. Four belonged to Ella Brinkley, who also had two runs and an RBI. Danielle Dennis had two RBI, and Ashley Klinzing and Isabella Wilson had two hits apiece.
