The University of Illinois Springfield softball team earned a doubleheader split against Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo. on Tuesday.
GAME ONE (L, 5-4)
UIS fell 5-4 despite out-hitting MWSUÂ 10-6. The Griffons scored their five runs in the first four innings, while UIS scored in the final three. The Prairie Stars left seven runners on base during game one.
Kelsie Burrows and
Taylor Zawacki each had a pair of hits, while Burrows scored one run.
Ella Brinkley,
Danielle Dennis, and
Jillian Mathis all recorded one RBI.Â
Reagan Miles (7-4), who pitched a one-hitter against McKendree on Sunday, took the loss. Miles is among the top of the GLVC standings with 79 strikeouts so far this spring.
GAME TWO (W, 1-0)
The Prairie Stars and the Griffons took game two to the eighth inning as
Taylor Zawacki (6-4) went eight innings, striking out nine, allowing three hits, no runs, and no walks.Â
There were just three hits in the first seven innings of game two, with two belonging to
Danielle Dennis and
Isabella Wilson. In the eighth,
Ella Brinkley reached on an error and scored when
Taylor Zawacki doubled to right center. The Griffons were unable to respond in their half of the inning and UIS earned the split.Â
UIS is now 21-14 overall. The Prairie Stars will travel to Romeoville, Ill. this weekend to take on the Lewis Flyers in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.Â
