Prairie Stars Men’s Basketball Falls in GLVC Quarterfinals to Southwest Baptist

The University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team saw a five-game win streak end when it fell to Southwest Baptist in the GLVC Quarterfinals by a score of 80-76. The Prairie Stars were eliminated from the GLVC Tournament, but await a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Bearcats started the matchup with a 9-2 run. UIS trailed closely and took the lead for the first time at 27-26 with a dunk by Jack Weber. SBU responded, and the Prairie Stars did not lead again despite staying within five points for much of the contest.

UIS got off to a slow start, shooting 41.9% from the field. Southwest Baptist entered halftime leading by five points after shooting 64.0% in the first half.

Yamani Shareef entered the game with 6:26 on the clock and made 3-of-4 attempted field goals to help the Prairie Stars cut into the Bearcat's lead. Jack Weber also made three of his last four.

Southwest Baptist made 15-of-17 free throws in the second half to build an eleven point lead with 2:30 remaining in regulation. Jack Weber responded to SBU's largest lead of the game with a steal and layup. The Prairie Stars also made four of their last five field goals, but could not erase their deficit before the clock ran out.

Michael Wright was the leading scorer with 16 points, while Jack Weber and Jordan Rice were close behind with 15 and 12, respectively. Weber pulled down nine rebounds and Rice contributed six assists.

The Prairie Stars are now 19-10 overall. UIS awaits Sunday's NCAA Tournament Selection show.
