Men’s Soccer Claims First GLVC Regular Season Title

The No. 10 ranked University of Illinois Springfield men's soccer team met the Lewis Flyers in its second to last game of the regular season on Friday night. The Prairie Stars won on a lone goal from Drew Keller to become GLVC regular season champions for the first time in program history.

"This is something I had my sights set on when I came here and to finally achieve it brings a great sense of satisfaction," said Head Coach Adam Hall. " I am so proud of this team and everyone associated with the program. The building blocks have pushed us to this level over the past seasons. We look forward to continuing the journey in the postseason." concluded Hall.

UIS men's soccer had its 12th consecutive clean sheet, furthering its program record and tying the DII men's soccer record for consecutive shutouts (Wisconsin Parkside, 1989).

Game Summary
  • UIS took the lead in the tenth minute as Drew Keller converted a Max Tweddle corner kick into his first goal of the season
  • The teams were even in shots on goal with six each, while the Prairie Stars had a 3-1 advantage in shots on target (Drew Keller, Joe Conway, Moritz Albrecht)
  • Andrea Scapolo made one save while Lewis goalkeeper Sebastian Doppelhofer managed two including one from a Joe Conway penalty kick

"It's such a great feeling becoming champions!" shared forward Max Tweddle. " Everyone has worked hard this year and sacrificed a lot. We're proud of the achievement so far but there's still work to be done for the postseason."

The UIS men's soccer team was  picked third in the preseason coaches' poll behind Maryville and Indianapolis. The Prairie Stars are now alone at the top of the conference with a 10-0-2 record against GLVC opponents and a five-point lead on Indianapolis ahead of the last regular season game. UIS has outscored its conference opponents 23-0.
