The University of Illinois Springfield track and field program opened the 2023 indoor season at the Bellarmine Open on Friday. The Prairie Stars claimed the top three spots in the men's mile.
Noah McIntyre was just one second from the school record (
Blake Jones, 4:07.24, 2022)Â in his season-opener mile run. He finished first in 4:08.26.
Chris Cherry and
Matt Moler were second and third place, respectively, and
Ryan Jones rounded out the point scorers with his seventh-place finish. The UIS men's team collected 26 points in just one event.
Daniel Amponsah turned in a top-10 mark in the men's 60 meter. His time of 7.13 seconds was good for ninth place and a personal best.
Ellie Shonkwiler was the top finisher for UIS women's track and field with a 10th place finish in the shot put. Shonkwiler's 9.32m mark is her best start to a season.Â
UIS competes next on Jan. 27 at the GVSU Bill Clinger Classic.
