The University of Illinois Springfield men's soccer team could not get the ball to bounce its way on Sunday at Kiwanis Stadium. The Prairie Stars finished with a 1-1 tie in their GLVC opener versus Missouri S&T.
Â
UIS had a 14-7 shot advantage in the game, and it controlled the ball for nearly 60 percent of the game. The Prairie Stars hit two post, missed a penalty kick, and allowed an own goal which helped Missouri S&T leave Springfield with a tie.
Â
Missouri S&T got on the board first in the 24th minute when UIS had an own goal on a misplayed ball back to the keeper. Around both ends of that goal, the Prairie Stars had good chances, but their shots deflected off the post and away from the goal line.
Â
In the second half, UIS scored an equalizer in the 52nd minute when
Lucas Harris scored off an assist from
Federico D'Andrea. In the 70th minute, the Prairie Stars earned a penalty kick, but a save by the Missouri S&T goalie kept the game tied. Both teams had multiple shots after that, but neither team could score for the remainder of the game.
Â
Alberto Valsecchi made two saves in goal for the Prairie Stars. Offensively, Harris and
Anton Aduwa-Emovon each had three shots on goal.
Â
UIS moves to 1-2-1 on the season. The Prairie Stars hit the road next Friday for a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament second-round match against Maryville.
