The University of Illinois Springfield softball team started its weekend road trip off on the right note with a doubleheader sweep over William Jewell. The final scores from Kansas City, Mo. were 6-3 and 12-3.

In the opener, the Prairie Stars and Cardinals were tied at three after four innings. In the fifth,
Danielle Dennis drew a one-out walk, and the team followed that with a double by
Jillian Mathis. The next three batters,
Ramsey Armstrong,
Laney Gowin, and
Zoie Bowman all had RBI hits for the deciding runs.

Mathis finished the game with three hits, one run, and one RBI. Dennis scored twice, and Armstrong and Gowin both had one run and one RBI.
Grace Harris finished with two hits.

On the mound,
Payton Long won her 10th game of the year. She threw a complete game and struck out seven batters. She allowed just six hits, three walks, and three runs.

In the second game, UIS scored seven times in the first two innings, and never trailed in the contest. Leadoff batter
Carly Chovanec started things off right with an inside-the-park homer, and would finish the day with four hits, three runs, two RBI, and two home runs.

Jacy Watts also homered with a three-run shot in the seventh. Mathis finished a big day with three hits, three runs, and two RBI. Armstrong had three hits, and Bowman had two.

Reagan Miles and
Addyson McClure combined for a one-hitter. Miles threw six innings and allowed one hit and two unearned runs. McClure threw a perfect seventh inning, including two strikeouts to end the game.

UIS improves to 24-13 on the season and 8-8 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars continue their road trip at Truman State on Sunday.
