Baseball Reaches 30 Wins With Big Offensive Game

The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team saw its offense get going early in the opening game of its Missouri S&T series. The Prairie Stars had 16 hits in a 17-6 victory over the Miners.

UIS already led 4-1 in the fourth inning when it had a seven-run inning that essentially put the game away. The Prairie Stars would have two more three-run innings before the run-rule after seven innings.

Brandon Bannon and Zion Pettigrew got the team started quickly, with both hitting a double and scoring in the first, and both scoring again two innings later. Bannon ended with a team-high four runs, while Pettigrew had three runs and three RBI.

Austin Alderman collected four hits in the game, and he had three runs and two RBI. The other player with three runs was Kal Youngquist. Brant Vanaman led the team with five RBI, and he had two hits and two runs. Alderman, Hunter Phelps, and Noah Crowe each had two RBI.

On the mound, Colton Hale earned the victory. He allowed just one run and three hits through five innings, and finished the contest allowing three runs and seven hits in six frames. He struck out four, and the bullpen struck out two more in the seventh.

UIS is now 30-6 overall and 10-3 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars have won 12 straight overall. The series will continue on Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
